Duct Smoke Detectors

Duct Smoke Detectors

Reduce the spread of smoke, prevent injury and loss of life, and also prevent property damage caused from recirculated smoke

Apollo SL-2000 Duct Smoke Detector

The Requirement of duct smoke detectors was a result of a large fire in Las Vegas on November 21, 1980. The fire broke out in the kitchen of The Deli restaurant at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. Even though the fire was on the main floor, the smoke spread through the entire 26 story building, including the elevator shafts, stair wells, and air vents in the building. There was nothing to shut off the air handling units, so rooms that had open windows continued to refill with smoke. Due to the size of the building, it took four hours to evacuate. 85 people perished, most due to smoke inhalation and almost 700 more injured. It was the deadliest fire in Nevada history.

The result of the fire at MGM Grand resulted in stricter building codes to reduce the threat of smoke inhalation in a fire
Designed with contractors in mind, the Apollo SL-2000 Duct Smoke Detector is a “NO Tool Required” product. The covers open with a thumbscrew allowing for easier installation and maintenance
  • Easy to connect wires plus larger terminal screws
  • Conventional four wire
  • Wire diagram is inside box cover
  • No magnet needed or cover removal to test unit have built in test port

The duct smoke detector samples air moving thru the HVAC duct. When the smoke threshold is exceeded, the air handling unit servicing the duct is turned off. Exhaust systems and fire alarms are activated depending on what functions are required.

Ionization vs. Photoelectric

Ionization (ion) uses a small radioactive source and the principle of ion flow to detect visible and invisible particles of combustion within a chamber. Better suited for detection of small particulate smokes (ex. petroleum based materials).

Photoelectric (photo) uses a beam of infrared light aimed at an angle to a light sensor that measures light reflected from visible particles of combustion. Better suited for detection of large particulate smokes (ex. wood).

Both Ionization and Photoelectric versions available. Complete wiring details permanently attached to unit
