Almost every commercial HVAC Duct job designed by an Engineer will specify Flexible Duct Connections throughout the Supply and Return ductwork to isolate vibrations and dissipate noise in the duct trunk line that would otherwise come from air handlers, blowers, inline exhaust fans and anything else that’s moving air from the Mechanical Equipment.
Flexible Duct Connector in Use
These connectors typically consist of a 3″ wide flexible fabric or Canvas secured on either side to 3″ wide Galvanized sheet metal. For shops making TDC flexible connections, the dimension is 4″ rather than 3″. Widths and Types of the both the Fabric and the Metal vary depending on the contractor preference and type of job.
The product comes in a 100 ft roll and is boxed. The duct shop will pull the roll out of the box and cut off a length that equals the girth of the combined 4 sides of the Rectangular Duct to which it’s attaching. Once fabricated it will look like a short section of the ductwork with a flexible canvas in the middle and Once installed it will disguise into the run of the ductwork to which it’s being attached. Prior to going out to jobsite, these connectors are usually situated in the duct shop next to the ductwork to which they are connecting.
Though made in the duct shop, these flexible connections are always installed by the field on the jobsite once the ductwork is already hung. The Fabric’s flexibility provides another benefit besides a quieter duct system- it provides a faster installation by giving some leeway (margin for error) to the installer when getting the ducts in place. Trying to tie-in hard ducts means the measurements during installation must be dead on what the plans show. Having a flexible portion of the duct run means that it’s not a problem being off a few inches.
