The hammer over edge is referred to by some contractors as the tail of the female Pittsburgh seam.  It is the flange that is folded over itself when the Pittsburgh Lock is formed.

The factory sets the Hammer Over Edge to 5/16″ long on their 20 ga Pittsburgh Machine, but it can be adjusted by moving the entrance gauge bar.

On a 20 ga Pittsburgh Machine running 26 ga metal will produce a shorter hammer over edge than when running 20 ga metal through the machine. Many contractors are unaware of this or that they can adjust the hammer over edge length by moving the entrance guides position a small amount
